Nokia Media Master Firmware Patcher

Introduction

This utility patches Dream 5.x and Nokia FTA 1.0 firmware files and allows the name of the satellites and the presets for tuning to be changed using a simple Windows interface. I wrote this app because I use a Dreambox in North America and so the satellite names like Astra, Hotbird and Thor really don't apply here.

Using DreamP

Just launch the executable (it doesn't need any other files) and point the file dialog at a Dream 5.x or FTA 1.0 serial download binary file. You'll then see the screen below:

The FTA 1.0 code allows up to eight satellites to be stored with on screen signal preview for the first three. Just type the replacement names and enter a frequency, SR, FEC and polarity where you expect a signal to be. Click OK and then load the firmware in to the Media Master. If you don't want to patch the firmware, just click Cancel.

Notes

I've noticed a few odd things that I haven't figured out correctly in the binary code, so you might have odd problems with:

• Programming C-Band frequencies into the Preview Satellites doesn't appear to work.
• If you already have the d-box programmed and you don't want to mess up all the channels, keep the LO frequencies the same as they currently are. This is setup in the d-box, so the point here is to use replacement names that match how you've currently got the receiver setup.
• Because this utility just patches the Nokia firmware, the number of characters available for satellite names is limited. If you try to type too many characters, you'll get beeped at.
• There is no parameter checking anywhere - don't put bogus values in or you might have to re-load the firmware.
• I don't know where the PIDs come from in the firmware. Although with the exception of C-Band, I always get a lock whenever I program one of the Preview Satellites, I sometimes get a picture and sometimes don't when using the setup menu. I assume the firmware looks the MPEG-2 SI packets and then displays the first FTA one it sees, but who knows!
